We finally moved all the network gear out of the nursery and into its new home in the basement. The basement, you say? We built this wall panel and shelf for phone and network equipment in a central spot so we can get good Wifi reception throughout the house and also run ethernet, phone or cable more easily.

Not everything has been added on yet. I still have to hook up the network storage as well as add a proper telephone terminal block. Our current terminal is a 1940′s era ceramic model mounted on a floor joist above all this. It’s a mess and really needs replacing with a modern one.

Wireless is wonderful, but not as fast, secure, or reliable as wired networks. This shows the approximate locations and very approximate routes for the cables. We’ll probably use Cat 6 wire and a gigabit switch, just to reduce the time until we want to upgrade.

The nearly illegible yellow says "Mesh to House". We use a mesh network (Sveasoft) to share internet connections with another home, with my satellite backing up their faster microwave connection. As of today, if you are on the mesh you can everyone’s shared files. With the new plan, the home network will be isolated from browsing by mesh users.

For all of those who thought I’d fallen off the planet, I’m sorry…Still here, hanging in… Even if I don’t comment, I still look, and you know what? You guys take AWESOME pictures…:))

Work has been a little crazy the last week or so, …had a key developer resign, financial year end for large portion of our customers, and just HAD to get the server farm up and sorted.

Meet Vader and Enterprise. Vader runs a 2003 terminal server for secure remote access to the accounting system, and a SQL 2000 development server, both virtualised in VMWare Server on SuSe 10.1. Enterprise runs SQL 2005 for the accounting system, the public FTP site, Fax and Print server and BACKUP(!) services :) ) on a stripped version of XP Pro (what I call XP Server …lol!)

Some guys could have knocked this lot together in a few hours. Took me a while longer…:(

Cool Servers Images

Check out these Servers images:

MCLI Server “Farm”
Servers

A tour of the mcli server "farm", more of an agglomeration.

Starting from the left, we have "Jade", a 1.33GhZ Apple Xserver that runs CogDogBlog (weblog plus a few more), the Feed2JS site as well as virtual hosting Maricopa eP, an electronic portolio system. The Xserve also does some QuickTime streaming, such as our examples of Digital Stories created by faculty in a summer workshop.

Below the table, the left tower is Azurite, a Mac OSX server (1 GHz) that mainly hosts project files and FileMaker databases used my our office staff. It runs as a web server just a copy of our Writing HTML tutorial as well as a smaller amount of QuickTime streaming.

The tower on the right is a 664 MhZ Pentium 2, also know as "Realgar" where I test a few new applications, run an evaluation license of Helix (Real Media server), and some things like a copy of my Kiwi Wiki.

To the right of this is a 20 minute APS battery backup. Just in case your power goes out… for less than 20 minutes. All the servers are set to reboot if their power goes out.

What is really cool is a new Belkin OmniViewKVM switch (left of the monitor), a 4 way switchbox so you can use one Keyboard, Video, and Mouse to switch between 4 computers– the nice feature here is the ability to connect to either USB (Mac) or PS/2 (the old PC) connections.

Finally, on the shelf above are 4 FireWire hard drives, used for backups of the two Mac servers with Retrospect. Each server rotates backups between two external drives.

The PC server backs up over the ntetwork to another server upstairs, which then does its own backups on a dedicated tape drive.
