Are you new to the domain of computer and dont have good idea about computer server? Wondering why are they used and what is their importance in computing domain? Well, if your answer is yes, this article is worth reading. A server is simply a computer where all data and information is stored and it delivers this info to other computers that are connected to it by a network. This network should be either through cables or wirelessly through a router. For any type of PC related issues you can consult a computer repair company.
A server performs multiple tasks like centralized data management and file sharing as well as sharing resources such as fax machines and printers, etc. Typically, in any organization, computer servers are among the most important infrastructure. It serves all the computers or terminals that are connected to it. Based on the use of the computer server, tasks differ. A server stores applications and databases that are required by the computers connected to it. A server also offers computer security features as it uses a firewall and protects all the computers that are connected to it.
One thing should be noted that the operating system and application of a server are not same as a normal computer. A server offers secure application sharing, Internet connectivity and data backup functionality. The hardware of the server is also different as it comes with enhanced hardware features. A server comprises multi-core processors, faster RAM, and several hard drives. For a small office environment, the server should include two processors and some 6 hard drives.
For the individual users, normally there is no requirement to use any server. But for businesses be it large or small, importance of a server is undeniable. The server comprises a central user directory where the username and passwords of all the employees are stored. Users can log into any computer on the network by using their username and password.
A server offers better and more secure file sharing. The central user directory of the server could be used to allow or deny access to files and folders. This is very useful as all the users dont need access to all the files. A server allows you to build an intranet and extranet.
Data is more precious than anything else. And in order to secure data most small businesses add a tape drive to the server. Due to a catastrophic failure, fire, or flood the server could be damaged. So to protect valuable data, backup software runs on the server and it backs up the server’s operating system and files to the tape. After completing backup, these tapes can be stored in a secure location.
So, from the discussion it is quite clear that how important role a server plays in todays information technology domain. If you are an advanced computer user, and if you want to take your computing experience to an all new level, lets get your first server.
