Network Network Network Is

Network, Network, Network – Is That The Way To Get A Job These Days?

Article by Carole Martin

“Whenever I see advice from someone about how to find a job all I ever hear is – network, network, network,” says the unemployed woman. “What is all this network stuff about?” she asks.

Here are some answers to those of you who are wondering the same thing – what is this network, network, network?

Fact:

The majority of all jobs (70-80%) are found through networking.

The best way to get a job is to get out there and be seen – network, network, network.

Where do I network?

Everywhere – meetings, classes, job fairs, open houses, social events, association meetings.

With whom do I network?

Everyone – family, friends, neighbors, ex-bosses, former co-workers, vendors you worked with in your last jobs, competitors of your last job, contacts through others, informational interviewing – interview.monster.com/rehearsal/informational/

Talk to people who are doing the type of work that you might like to do. Identify contacts by asking, “is there anyone else you could recommend I speak with?” or “do you know anyone in ___ career who might be willing to talk to me?”.

This is about sales and numbers – get out there and get contacting. Rehearse and script what you are going to say when you do follow up.

What if they ask you what you are looking for? Have an answer ready.

What if they ask you, “Tell me about yourself?” Have an answer ready to go. This is your product information – and you are the product. What do you have to offer?

If you’re posting resumes on the Internet sites and waiting for something to happen you are making a big mistake – and may be in for a long wait.

That is the passive way to search for a job, and it used to work. But in today’s competitive job market you are hoping against the odds of getting noticed.

To Network – Or not to Network?

Not To Network

1. I don’t want to bother anyone – don’t want to be a nuisance.

2. I really don’t know anyone who would be of any help anyway.

3. Why bother – it won’t do any good.

To Network

1. The “Hidden Job Market” – 60 % of jobs not listed.

2. #1 method for finding a job is through “the grapevine”.

3. It’s just talking to people – formally and informally.

Network Mistakes

1. Not introducing yourself in a confident manner

2. Not mentioning a referral name

3. Not focusing – or focusing too much on self-interest

4. Not being prepared – one – two minute “personal statement”

Be Prepared

1. Any time, any place

2. Go beyond your personal contacts

3. Establish a rapport

4. Look for opportunities to reciprocate

5. Keep your promises

Watch your network grow and the knowledge you gain by contacting people you know (and do not know) in order to find information about an industry, organization, or job/internship.

Why does networking work? Networking works because you are being proactive and driven by your resourcefulness. Networking puts you in touch with individuals who can give you ‘insider information’ on vacancies, industry or organizational culture, and required skills, etc.

Network, Network, Network…..

Networking The Backbone Of

Networking – the Backbone of Generation Z

Networking, in the recent past, has become a word synonymous with the cyber world. In simple terms, networking may be defined as interconnection of computing devices in order to share data. A group of computers interconnected by communication channels facilitate sharing of information, the prime determinant of life itself.

Networks are built with a combination of computer hardware and software. Network Interface Cards (NICs), Bridges, Hubs, Switches, and Routers are some of the basic hardware components used to interconnect the key elements of the computer network. Interlinked with the proper communication paths, networks link to other networks and also contain sub networks. The network layer is the platform on which networks are classified. The functionality of the same is based on basic reference models such as the five-layer Internet Protocol Suite (IP). (A protocol is the communication language used by computing devices.)

Computer networks may be classified based on the type of networks, design, mode of connection, and topology. The types of networks are Personal Area Network (PAN), Local Area Network (LAN), Campus Area Network (CAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), and Global Area Network (GAN). Client-server and peer-to-peer are the two types of high-level network design. It is based on the relationship within the elements in a network. Networks can be classified based on the technology, i.e., the computer hardware employed to enable interlinking devices in the network. For instance, Optical fiber, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, HomePNA, or Power line communication are some of the hardware components that are used. Depending on the topology (layout of connected devices), networks are also distinguished such as Bus, Star, Ring, Mesh, Star-bus, Tree or Hierarchical topology networks, etc.

As a proactive tool, network management helps to design, deploy, and maintain processes. Serving as a powerful tool in the telecommunications market, networking is the reason behind the paradigm shift evident in today?s advanced technology offerings. From cables and routers that link devices, to executing commands based on defined set of rules, transmitting of data has been in the process. The fine infrastructure in networking accelerates the development of cutting-edge solutions.

Networking, in the techno-savvy world makes more sense in relating to the masses than the communication methods of the bygone era. The major advantages of network are speed in connectivity and communication, sharing of resources at a secure and reliable level, enhancement of application performance and balancing, and most of all flexibility to access and connect with people. Networking occupies a prominent place in the information superhighway. On a career perspective, according to the Wall Street Journal (2006), 94% of successful job seekers claimed that was the reason for making a huge difference in their careers.

On a lighter vein, it may be worth quoting Guy Almes, a pioneer in the development of Internet. He states thus: ?There are three kinds of death in this world.

Networking

Question by Tomas M: Networking?
General Networking Questions?

Ok, so I am good with computers in general, but my weakness is Networking by far. so……..

1) We had someone set up our network for us, I have no idea how to add a comptuer to my network when I can see my network in “view workgroup computers”.

2) I want to set up a server for everyone to be able to save documents on it.

3)Is there any way to combine two networks in the same house to act as one?

4)If I am hosting a website, is a switch safer to use than a Hub?

I need to know how to do everything in the list above, PLEASE HELP ME!!!

thanks!

P.S. Can any of you explain, somewhat in detail, how i would do everything above

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew
1) Goto My Network Place -> (on the left window pane) click Set-up a Home Network {be sure to enable Printer Sharing and the name of the workgroup must be the same with other pc)

2)Create a shared folder on your server pc, disable all folder permissions that restricts access. Then of each pc you should Map it as a network drive. you can do this by going to the shared folder across the network, right click on it then select Map Network Drive.

3)I’m not sure with this but you can try this: goto Control Panel -> Network Connections. You’ll see different network connections in there (select more than one connection by using CTRL + click on icon you want to combine ) right click on either icons then choose Bridge Connection

4)In terms of security, I don’t think that a switch or a hub has security. I think it’s in the router. Choose the best router you can find. (FYI: a switch its better to choose than a hub because it divides network banwidth almost equally not like a hub)
